Its been just over one month since John Neiner started full-time here at Pixel! Wow… a month already! He started getting in the groove the first day he started and has been bringing himself up to speed rapidly. Though John has no lack of talent, he felt his knowledge of the Creative Suite was lacking so he took up the task of learning as much as possible about that set of programs. Now he comes to my office and uses shortcuts I have never used (let alone know about!) to get things done.
I have been seeing John’s amazing work almost every day for the past month… but today I got to see the final printed product of one of John’s first projects he designed after coming on full-time.
Every year our studio handles the design of a brochure for our local UCP’s annual golf tournament and this year I assigned John with the task of designing a new cover and updating the layout. This year was also the first year we had three panels instead of two, so there were more layout changes than were usually encountered.
John based his design on some of my work from the previous year, but he took the cover and other elements in a totally new direction. Playing off the sophistication of golf, John used various-sized words with a serif font to form the brochure title and interior headers, and a monochromatic image and color palette for the interior layout. The finished result was truly spectacular and is a fitting addition to our studio.
Be on the lookout for more of John’s projects in our portfolio area.
John, thanks for making such a great effort to learn and grow with my business!
Pixel Design got a great man and hard worker. I worked with John for 4 years and he is truely missed for his great work. Doug and the Pixel Design group got a great asset to there team when John became full time. Can’t wait to see all his great work out there. Good luck John and I greatfull to see you doing such great work.
Thanks Tammy! It was great to work with you as well. I am sure you are doing a fine job of keeping things running smoothly at the store. Your multi-tasking abilities are pretty incredible!
Doug,
It seems I have a new model for inspiration.
John,
You are tremendously talented. How, oh how, can I be like you?
I am new to the design industry, so I love being inspired by others who have that same passion.

I’ve got a good start, but wonder what will take me to the next level.
Your Student,
Colin
Colin,
There is no need to idolize one person in particular. In fact, it will work against your growth. Sure you can learn different techniques by looking John’s artwork, but you have to be able to learn from everyone, and everything you see around you. Before you know it, you will have your own little ways of doing certain things, and will start to develop your own style. I’m sure there’s tons of tutorials, tips, inspiration, and other materials just waiting to be discovered by you.
Good luck to you, Colin.
If you need help finding some handy tutorials, shoot me an email (you can find it on my website).

John, good work as always!
